In the spirit of celebrating our sporting role models, let us introduce you to Jake Waller. Jake is a highly achieving and talented athlete who also understands the importance of balance, which is why he is also studying at Sydney Uni. Jake is a great role model for young people who aim high and are willing to work hard. He is also a friendly and down-to-earth bloke which is equally as important.

1.     What boarding school did you go to?

Scots College Sydney (Kirkland house)

2.     What was your best experience at Boarding School?

For me there isn’t a single best experience in my six years as a boarder. However the opportunity to live in a house with 50 new brothers, an oval, pool, gym and library all right at  the doorstep was more than enough to keep me preoccupied every day.

3.     What is your favourite memory from Boarding School?

Sunday afternoon’s in summer always meant a giant game of touch footy on the oval. It was a great opportunity to get out and bond with boys from all year groups and blow off some steam. If it was raining and muddy it was always a bonus.

4.     What are you doing now?

I’m currently studying post-graduate Medicine at the University of Sydney and Rowing as part of the Mosman Rowing U23/Elite squad.

5.     Has anything you learnt at boarding school helped you with your current career?

Boarding school placed me in a large social environment where it’s not always possible to be on everyone’s good side all of the time. This helped me to understand how to be tolerable and accepting of other people’s views, beliefs and feelings. This skill has been vital in my studies to date.

6.     Any advice for young kids going to boarding school?

Boarding school, especially Scots, presents young men and women with an amazing number of opportunities. I was always told that you should never let an opportunity go by without giving it a fair go. If you give everything your best shot it’s difficult to have regrets.

The School of the EXPO Award celebrates genuine connection between families and schools. Voted on by families attending each event, the award recognises schools that stand out for their friendliness, presentation, and knowledge of boarding life. It’s a fun, interactive way for families – and their children – to engage with the schools in the room, while giving exhibitors valuable feedback on what resonates most. Each winning school receives a free registration for the following year’s Expo in recognition of their excellence.
