Sometimes the experiences that shape us most aren’t the ones we expect.
When Kate Brow looks back on her life, she can trace many of the qualities she relies on today – resilience, confidence, adaptability and courage – back to a single year spent boarding with her school cohort.
At the time, it was simply part of the school’s program. Students left their familiar lives behind and spent a year living together in the mountains, hiking, running, learning practical skills and being pushed well beyond their comfort zones.
What Kate didn’t realise then was how many of those lessons would stay with her.

In this heartfelt episode of Letters from Home, Kate reflects on the friendships forged through shared challenges, the confidence that comes from discovering what you’re capable of, and the enduring impact of learning to live alongside people from vastly different backgrounds.
That year also introduced her to a world beyond the city.
Growing up in Geelong, Kate never imagined she would one day become a farmer’s wife living in the Snowy Mountains. Yet many of the friendships she formed with boarding students from rural Australia quietly expanded her view of what life could look like.
Today, Kate is raising three children on the land, balancing family life with a career dedicated to supporting women and families.
Her own experience of isolation as a new mother in rural Australia became the catalyst for her involvement with both the Gidget Foundation and Motherland.
After struggling through a lonely and anxious first year of motherhood, Kate found something she had been searching for: connection.
That connection came through Motherland Village, a program that matches rural mothers from across Australia into small groups where they can share experiences, support one another and build lasting friendships.
What began as a participant soon evolved into something much bigger. Today Kate manages the Motherland Village program, helping hundreds of rural women discover what she discovered herself — that they are not alone.
This conversation explores boarding school, friendship, motherhood, mental health, rural life and advocacy. But at its heart, it’s about belonging.
It’s about finding your people.
And it’s about discovering that some of life’s biggest opportunities begin with a single step outside your comfort zone. And, maybe a long run up a really big mountain.
