What to pack in care packages

care-packages-for-boardersBefore long, parents will be packing up their children to return to boarding school after the winter holidays. So what else goes into their bags to help them settle back in after the winter break?

Ugg boots and a warm doona are the top of many boarders’ lists of must-pack items. Others stock up on two-minute noodles and enough chocolate cake or cookies to share with their mates.

But what do you send in a “care package” during term time? While emails are now common and are a great way for sharing news and photos, who doesn’t love receiving a letter in the mail – or better still, a parcel?

Parcels show you care, especially if you send their favourite things. Check what the school allows but here are some suggestions:

  • Late night movie snacks such as pretzels or microwave popcorn (depending on facilities)
  • Sachets of porridge, cup-a-soup or drinking chocolate
  • Your child’s favourite lollies or chocolates (eg a bag of bite-sized bars or Freddos)
  • Special toiletries, especially for girls
  • Soft tissues and lip balm in winter
  • A toy like a Frisbee to have fun with friends

Home baking is also a favourite – but nothing that might perish within three days in case it doesn’t reach the boarding house straight away. Don’t forget great packaging and enough to share with friends.

If you’re short on time, send a card with cash – the money isn’t personal, but it will certainly be appreciated!
