Melbourne Grammar School

Boys have been boarding at Melbourne Grammar School since 1858. Today, our boarders are welcomed into a caring and inclusive environment where they are supported to thrive. Dedicated staff and a structured program help each student achieve his academic potential, build strong relationships, develop confidence, and grow in independence in preparation for tertiary study and adult life.

With 112 places available from Years 7 to 12, our boarding community reflects a rich diversity of backgrounds and experiences. Most boarders join us from rural and regional Australia or interstate, alongside a small number of international students and expatriate families.

Life in the School’s boarding houses offers a genuine home away from home. Boys reside in two elegant Victorian terrace houses close to the city centre, overlooking Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Iconic landmarks such as the MCG, the Tan, Albert Park Lake, Chapel Street and the CBD are all within walking distance.

Living alongside their peers, boarders develop strong friendships, communication skills, and an appreciation for teamwork and mutual respect. Accommodation arrangements are tailored to each stage of schooling: boys in Years 7 and 8 share rooms with two or three others; Years 9 and 10 share with one roommate; and students in Years 11 and 12 enjoy single rooms.

The boarding houses are led by Heads of House and supported by dedicated boarding tutors who oversee students’ daily wellbeing. As many staff also teach in the day school, they provide integrated academic and pastoral support. Boarding staff build strong relationships with students and maintain regular communication with families regarding academic, social and co-curricular progress.

Academic success is a key focus of boarding life. Structured study time is built into each evening, and specialist tutors in mathematics and study skills seminar visits during the week to provide additional support.
