Uniquely located in the Snowy Mountains region of NSW, Snowy Mountains Grammar School has offered boarding since the School was established in 1996. 

“Our boarding intention is to provide a ‘home away from home’ experience. We aim to be flexible, where possible, to provide an individual and nurturing experience for all students. We encourage students to embrace challenge, to be involved, to find their passion and learn new skills”, says SMGS Head of Boarding, Mrs Melissa Kenney.

We are encouraged to be involved in the Jindabyne community and are given the opportunity to consistently develop our growth and learning”, says boarding student Blyss, who was announced as School Co-Captain for 2023. 

The spectacular lakeside location nestled in the mountains provides our boarding and day students with an environment in which to grow and develop that is nurturing, clean and healthy. The natural ‘playground’ that our students call home is simply inspiring. Canberra is an easy two-hour drive to the north, while Perisher and Thredbo are just thirty minutes away.  

 SMGS boarders are provided with an excellent activities program, taking advantage of our unique location near the ski fields and the beautiful natural environment of the surrounding rural areas. During winter, boarders have the option to be on the mountain three days a week! Other activities include equestrian, aviation, mountain biking, trampolining, netball, soccer, rugby and Navy Cadets, providing boarders with ample activities throughout the year. Our weekend program often takes advantage of Lake Jindabyne, Kosciuszko National Park, Canberra and the South Coast. 

“Boarding at SMGS for the last five years has been a great opportunity. During my time at SMGS I have made lifelong friends and experienced many things, with welcoming staff and students who share common interests in the outdoors and learning. Being so close to the mountains and part of the Jindabyne community has meant that I have been able to ski, play rugby, ride and even fly in a supported and unique one-of-a-kind school environment”, says Spedding, Year 11 student and SMGS 2023 Sports Co-Captain. 

SMGS offers students a number of flexible boarding options, including weekly, full-time, winter-only (Term 3) and our renowned Elite Snowsports Academy (ESA). 

 Boarding Bursaries and Scholarships  

SMGS offers a range of scholarships for Middle School and Senior School students, including Rural Farming and Boarding Bursaries, Academic Excellence, General Excellence Merit, Music and Arts, and Excellence in Innovation and Technology. 

Scholarship applications for 2026 enrolment will open in Term 4 2024.
