St-Joseph’s-College-Hunters-Hill

An independent Catholic day and boarding school for boys Years 7 to 12

St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill has a long tradition of excellence in boys education. Founded by the Marist Brothers in 1881, it has provided generations of boys with opportunities, encouragement and support to realise their potential.

The College prides itself on offering boys a well-balanced and comprehensive education. Guided by the motto, ‘In Meliora Contende – Strive for Better Things‘, Joeys brings out the best in each boy – academically, spiritually, socially and physically.

The College is, undoubtedly and proudly, a family. Over 50 per cent of students are enrolled as boarders with day boys present well beyond the typical hours of a school day. There is no distinction between boarder and day student, with all day students having their own space in the dormitories. Day boys who participate in our extended day program remain at the College for dinner and supervised study before going home for the evening at 8.00pm (all included in day student fee).

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and geographic locations, creating a diverse community that is greatly valued by the boys and their families. During their time at the College, students form extremely close and loyal friendships, many of which last a lifetime, as the College’s Old Boys will attest.

Student wellbeing is central to life at Joeys. The College is committed to ensuring students’ physical and mental wellbeing, with a 24-hour onsite Health Centre, a Counselling Team and healthy, nutritionally-assessed meals. The Joeys Mentor Program is a key component of the College wellbeing approach. Every student has a Mentor Teacher and attends Mentor Group for 10 minutes each morning and for 40 minutes on Wednesday. It is shaped by three key areas; Faith Formation, including social justice education; Academic Endeavour, using our STRIVE Learning Framework; and Social and Emotional Learning.

For boarders, a rigorous curriculum is complemented by compulsory, supervised evening study, where students have access to tutor support and College resources. The outcome is strong study skills and an excellent work ethic. Relaxation time is also an important element at the College. Boarders go on regular outings, play in the College grounds and pool or spend time in the boarding common areas with television, music and games.
