‘Spirit of the Bush’ Scholarship

The Spirit of the Bush Scholarship celebrates the resilience, contribution and heart of rural, regional and remote kids. More than financial support, it recognises the spirit our young people bring to boarding schools – strengthening community, belonging and culture across the whole school. Awards are based not on grades alone, but on spirit and a family’s commitment to the communities they call home. By supporting families to educate their children without leaving the bush, we help ensure our small towns and regions retain the people who make them strong. Spirit of the Bush opens doors to opportunity while keeping families connected to the land, towns and communities that are the very fabric of rural Australia.

Why we launched ‘Spirit of the Bush’ Scholarship

We created the Spirit of the Bush Scholarship to ensure that rural, regional and remote families don’t have to leave their communities to access quality education. Too often, the postcode penalty forces families away from the very towns and properties that depend on them. By recognising spirit, resilience and community commitment, this scholarship helps children access boarding opportunities while keeping their families connected to the bush – sustaining the heart, strength and future of rural Australia.

Scholarship Criteria

The Spirit of the Bush Scholarship is guided by the values that make our rural and remote families strong. Final criteria are being shaped in consultation with our Foundation’s Advisory Board, but will likely include:

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Evidence of character and integrity
  • Active community involvement and commitment by the family
  • A definable “spirit of the bush” that shines through the child
  • Alignment with the scholarship’s purpose to support families to remain in rural, regional and remote Australia

The School of the EXPO Award celebrates genuine connection between families and schools. Voted on by families attending each event, the award recognises schools that stand out for their friendliness, presentation, and knowledge of boarding life. It’s a fun, interactive way for families – and their children – to engage with the schools in the room, while giving exhibitors valuable feedback on what resonates most. Each winning school receives a free registration for the following year’s Expo in recognition of their excellence.
